IB UPDATES & CALENDAR EVENTS:

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!

October 26, 2010  ~~~ Our annual parent informational meeting will be held in our theatre from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Although designed primarily for 8th grade parents, anyone is welcome to attend. The PowerPoint used will be posted on the school IB website for anyone who cannot attend.

Nov. 1, 2010 - Feb. 1, 2011 ~~~ Window for 8th grade and higher students to submit district IB applications to Sharry Colnar (or to the district office for transfer students)

May 2011 exams for IB seniors and juniors:

All testing fees are due Oct. 15.  First-time IB exam takers pay $141 registration plus $96 per exam, so typical junior fees are $237 if they are taking only one IB course.  Typical senior fees are 5x$96 = $480.  The number of exams per year will vary by student.  Fee registration forms will be sent home Sep. 3 and are also available from the school website at granitebayhigh.org/academics/ib/.  These are due to Ms. Colnar by Oct. 15.  EVERY STUDENT ENROLLED IN AN IB COURSE MUST PAY THESE FEES.  Diploma Candidates pay the Reg. fees only once; Certificate students must pay the Reg. fees each year.  Early counts show that in May 2011 we will administer 10 exams during 20 sessions to 82 students.

IB T-shirts:

Please help us earn some extra money for IB by buying IB T-shirts designed by our students.  Shirts are grey-green or sky blue.  We are charging $10 for students (actual shirt cost) and $15 for adults.  Help support your IB family by purchasing a shirt!  We have lots of XL and XXL (good for nightshirts or extra comfortable wear).  Please email me if you can help us out.

Pre-IB Students:

All parents of Class of 2013 and 2014 are on our email list will be notified of all events.  Please keep me in the loop and email me if you decide to join the IB program or if you choose to drop the program.  Both require a formalized form which must be submitted to me.

Parents wanted:

We are always looking for highly organized parents who have lots of free time!  I would really like to recruit a couple more parents for our small parent meetings held once a month on IB Thursday.

Reminders:

For those new parents, I prefer all communications with me be via email, not phone calls.  I guarantee I will respond much faster with email.  You can reach me at scolnar@rjuhsd.us.   I really appreciate this.

"IB Is Your Passport to A Global Future ... Now, More Than Ever"

GBHS is an official World IB School!  IB Diploma Candidates work in grades 11 and 12 toward the full IB Diploma, which includes choosing at least 6 courses from a total of 11 IB courses offered, 150 hours of CAS and the Extended Essay. However, any GBHS students may take one or more IB courses if they have the prerequisites, and they do NOT need to be an IB Diploma Candidate. These are called Certificate students. Please see Ms. Colnar for information on either IB pathway.

Attention 8th graders:  District applications may be submitted starting Nov. 1, 2010 through Feb. 1, 2011.

Attention All IB Transfer students:  First, you will need to get the transfer approval (from the district office), then call GBHS for a date to come in to register.  Your IB progress is assessed yearly, and transfer students need to demonstrate minimal IB involvement (at least 3 IB courses).  All pre-IB 10th graders must be enrolled in the AP Euro /English block courses.

If you are currently enrolled as a 9th or 10th grade IB Diploma candidate, and you decide you cannot continue the full IB Diploma Program or even a few IB courses, I need to speak with your parents before an official disenrollment from the IB can be processed . You can still enroll in as many IB courses as you want, even if you are not a Diploma Candidate. You would simply move from Diploma status to Certificate status.

Please visit this IB website often for news about this or any future meetings for parents or students. These meetings will also be advertised in our newsletters and daily bulletins at GBHS. To contact the IB Coordinator, email Sharry Colnar at https://mail.google.com/mail?view=cm&tf=0&to=scolnar@rjuhsd.us. Voicemail is difficult during the school day, so you will probably receive much quicker responses via email. Thanks so much for your interest in this world-class program!

IB stands for International Baccalaureate, which is a worldwide program started in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland to offer a sophisticated, broad-based curriculum for 11th and 12th grade students.

The goal of the IB Organization is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring students and teachers who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB program encourages students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
